Saving a Whale

Michael Fishbach spends two months in the Sea of Cortez every watching whales. He helps track these animals and observes their complex behaviors in the wild.

One February day he saved the life of a humpback whale.

It appeared to be dead. His boat floated next to the whale for several minutes and saw no signs of life. Suddenly the whale exhaled. Fishbach eased into the water with his snorkeling gear and discovered the whale to be ensnared in a net.

Valentina was close to death and panicked.

Though the situation was bleak, with a knife they freed the whale’s fins, and away it went.
