In 2006 US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans dared to call the extermination of over a million Armenians a “genocide” an act which cost him his job.

Evans caegorization elicited praise from Armenians all over the world; and initially from the American Foreign Service Association, which decided to award Evans its “Constructive Dissent” award.

In a break from the explicit condemnation of “genocide” that President Ronald Reagan had made while in office,  the George W. Bush administration, which Evans served, had shied away from using the charged term, under pressure from Turkey.

The AFSA later withdrew its offer of the “Constructive Dissent” award, and the State Department forced Evans to retire early.

He speaks here at a public rally  in Washington, DC.
