I’ll never forget when my family first moved to Brazil, when I was 13 and we spent the first of many weekends in the cottage my Brazilian grandmother had built, in the middle of the rainforest near the ocean.

There was no electrification. We were literally out in the wild. It was amazing!

It’s awful to think about how, today, that same beach is lined with 20-story condos, going blocks, inland; the Old Growth rainforest lots, where my grandmother’s little house used to be, have long since been mowed down.

But back then, there were bugs – and teeny monkeys – which were BOTH about the same size as Matchbox Cars.

One of the most impressive things I ever saw was when, one fine day, a colony of leafcutter ants had decided to “move house”. They’re pretty big and they bite!

They were coming right for us. My grandmother knew just what to do: she opened the doors on each side of the
cottage and they marched right through the house.

Within minutes, this immense red army, hoisting bright green leaves had passed right through the house and they were gone
without a trace, instead of clambering all over the building – and getting all over us!

This is a beautiful film about the unlikely subject of ants and an in-depth study about them; how they eerily remind us about ourselves impress us with their relative superiority, in certain ways and about how ants are actually helping humans to solve global problems.
