The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in August 2005, has captured spectacular images of the surface of Mars. At a cost of over $40 million, it is the result of a collaboration between Ball Aerospace & Technologies and the University of Arizona. Each pixel in these images can capture detail as close as a foot.

This incredible collection shows that the red planet possess more than a few shades of red.
