The declining cost of home-video equipment gave ’70s media collectives in California’s Bay Area the resources to back artists from the counterculture, some of whom utilized experimental image-processing technologies, or documented feminism at a time when the Equal Rights Amendment was still on the table. What were mostly the collectives’ private screening materials documented media talking heads’ reactions to their stunts – such as crashing a heroic tank-like car through a wall of TVs, or reenacting the Kennedy assassination only 12 years after the fact.
