The West preaches that liberal democracy is a prerequisite for the rest of the world to achieve its own unparalleled economic successes. But in the past 30 years a challenger has emerged in the form of China to question that minority consensus, Dambisa Moyo told a TED audience.

Despite the communist country’s state capitalism and de-emphasis on democracy, its economic planning has achieved explosive infrastructural development, and rapidly increased and economic equality and per capita wealth. A global survey suggests that in the absence of a certain level of general wealth, democracies are doomed.

According to Freedom House, though half of world governments are democratic, half of those governments cannot ensure freedom of speech or movement.

Though Moyo contended that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was “unanimously adopted,” in fact eight countries abstained from ratifying it.
