The exact details of how to build a nuclear weapon remain classified and under the Atomic Secrets Act, they’re illegal to publish in the United States.

On those fine points, a video explanation by Bill Hammack, an engineering professor at the University of Illinois-Champaign, cuts close to the mark – but not as close as an even more detailed explanation that The Progressive magazine published in 1979.

The Progressive’s story, now available elsewhere on the Web, triggered the second government action of its kind against the press, to suppress knowledge of the atomic bomb’s design. The Department of Energy had previously dropped a restraint order, after a long legal battle.

Hammack’s explanation is an excellent primer – for educational purposes only, of course. (One may as well know something about the weapon which has defined an entire Age).
