Maybe you have seen the political bumper sticker: “Cthulu 2012: Why Settle for a Lesser Evil?” Horror author H.P. Lovecraft cooked up some of the 20th century’s most terrifying, otherworldly monsters, including the octopus-faced sea lord Cthulu. Did H.P. Lovecraft’s xenophobia, his fear of the other, inspire him to strike dread into the readers of Weird Tales?

Take a break from the routine that literary snobs, as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, make out of cheating science fiction and fantasy. Neil Gaiman and Guiellermo del Toro help weave the story of the frightened nerd from a different America who defined a genre all of his own.
