Pig farmer Jerry Rosman claimed agrochemical giant Monsanto was engaged in a systematic campaign to harass, intimidate and threaten any farmer who spoke up about their corn sterilizing animals. Rosman, of Harlan, Iowa, found that his 2000 corn crop caused his pigs – and those of nearby farmers –- to become sterile as a result of GMO corn that mimicked estrogen in the swine’s bodies. Eventually, said Rosman, the debacle put him out of business.
The University of Iowa, Rosman alleged, initially backed his findings, and similar ones by other farmers, but caved due to pressure to get grants from Monsanto. In the absence of long-term animal trials, his fears were unlikely to go away.
