I’m pro-100% bio-ethanol/-diesel.
I am a firsthand witness to 100% sugarcane alcohol working great as a fuel for cars in Brazil (when their engines are re-worked to manage the water emissions produced, which are corrosive to steel). Alcohol combustion produces water & carbon dioxide, preferable to the additional carcinogenic toxins emitted by fossil fuel combustion.
I don’t know why cars for the US market don’t have the same alterations to their engine designs, since so much ethanol is already blended into domestic fuel.
For the US, natural gas & propane might be the quickest solutions for getting out of foreign petroleum, if the price of oil becomes such that the market will seriously drive the industry to produce replacements.
“If” is a big question, as it appears that the petroleum industry is so enmeshed with the war industry that the two cross promote each other, ad nauseum.
Corn & grain are not the best stuff with which to make alcohol; they just happen to be what got subsidized for this purpose in the US – because hemp is illegal.
Hemp biodiesel would be the better-suited, sustainable option for the Northerly latitudes – – and it wouldn’t take the staple crops out of peoples’ mouths.
(BTW hemp protein is a superior product and the first civilization in China ate almost nothing but hempseed porridge).

Hemp biodiesel doesn’t require fracking or cause the amount of environmental devastation and pollution as fossil fuels do, in both their extraction and in their combustion.
