Anyone who is a soccer (a.k.a. football) fan, will be sure to enjoy this piece, where the Brazilian-style “jogo bonito” (“beautiful play”) is on full display. The final slogan is: “Nobody Can Play Like We Do!” which is not even subject to debate.

The 19 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Brazil has won five times, the most of any -and it is the only national team to have played in every tournament.

What is not shown here are the extraordinarily athletic feats that can be witnessed daily on the beaches of Rio, where mixed teams of men and women play mad-fast volleyball, using only their bare feet!

What is also less known about Brazil is how good the ads are here (I’m in Rio as I write this). This is a Nike ad for the Brazilian market, entitled “Dare to Be Brazilian”.

The ad’s title is speaking to a palpable concern among the Brazilian people that the upcoming FIFA World Cup events, to be held in brand-new stadia being built across the massive country of Brazil, which is larger than the Continental US – will be as massive of a flop!

This is amid concerns that the construction projects will not be complete by the June 12, 2014 opening games, the country’s relatively poor road infrastructure, which will oblige many fans to fly rather than drive to the many games (the distances being what they are, it is actually more practical to fly, anyway). These fears were exacerbated last week, when there was a partial collapse of a stadium wall currently under construction in Sao Paulo, resulting in the deaths of two workers.

Still, the streets of Rio have long been accustomed to having the population of its streets swell peacefully every year by 2 million people, during both New Year’s Eve and during the 5 days of Carnaval – and the same can be said of its other cities, although in smaller numbers.

And if there is one thing from which Brazilians derive encouragement and optimism, it is that they do, indeed play football like nobody else.
