A Chinese geneticist, being a proud Chinaman had presumably been inculcated with the belief that the Chinese were a “race apart” and “special” – and although these things are certainly true – his belief that they sprang autochthonously from Homo erectus in Asia – and were in no way related to Africans – was not true.
When he did a study, in which genetic samples from isolated Chinese minorities throughout China were carefully tested – he ended up eating his hat – because all of the samples showed that these peoples all ultimately descended from Africans.
Happily, this led to his personal breakthrough, when he realized that “We should be happy about this because…humans from all over the world are not so different from each other and we are really close relatives.”
