In August 2008, there was an armed conflict called the South Ossetia War, in the region of the Georgian Republic by that name. The Georgian government initiated an attack against what they claimed was the region’s Russian-backed attempt to secede from that nation and indeed, Russia swiftly retaliated with bombing raids deep into Ossetian territory. The armed conflict lasted less than a month and Russian forces remain in the disputed territories, under bilateral agreements.

Part of the Russian offensive during the war involved the hacking into the government websites of the Georgian Republic, replacing images of that nation’s President, Mikheil Saakashvili with those of Adolf Hitler. The Internet servers used were re-routed heavily to evade the detection of their source.
