In an Involuntary Park, Nature Finds A Way


A nuclear accident in 1986 drove 116,000 Ukrainians to evacuate the site of the Chernobyl meltdown. Wildlife do not heed the street signs and roadblocks that keep humans away. Two decades later, as scientists continue to calculate the death toll to cancer the meltdown will take, animals are settling into the old abodes and workplaces of evacuees, and even changing their reproductive habits in response to radiation-fueled mutations.
