When the towers came down on September 11, millions of people ran for safety. Hundreds of thousands ran south to the edge of the water and were trapped.

When the people were trapped, independent boat operators took the initiative of helping their neighbors — banding together with total strangers in defiance of the terrorists who perpetrated the attack.

These stories of compassion are inspiring.
