This clip is not for acrophobes; It is a heady, a bird’s eye view of repairs being made to the finger of the Christ the Redeemer statue, in Rio de Janeiro. A perfect picture of the lightning strike which caused the damage was taken in January of this year and was sent around the world in miilions of peoples’ inboxes. Some Brazilians thought it might be a bad omen for the World Cup – but I guess it was just a bad omen for the Brazilian Team!

The statue is 30 meters (98 ft) tall, not including its 8-meter (26-ft) pedestal, and its arms stretch 28 meters (92 ft) wide. It sits atop the peak of the 700-metre (2,300-ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park, overlooking the city. The complex, which has several levels, includes a casual restaurant, seen below the repairman, with blue umbrellas.

Completed in 1931, the statue was designed by local engineer, Heitor da Silva Costa; it was sculpted by Polish-French sculptor, Paul Landowski and the face of the statue was created by Romanian sculptor, Gheorghe Leonida. It’s constructed of reinforced concrete and covered with mosaic tiles.

Repairs to this Art Deco Statue are routine, often with some corporate support, in this case, Pirelli tires.

The Redeemer was considered the largest Christ statue in the world from 1931 until 2010, when it was topped by the Christ the King statue in Poland, which is 10 feet taller, at 33 meters (108 ft), sporting a crown which adds another 3 meters (9.8 ft) to its height, along with its 16.5-meter (54-foot) mound of rubble, atop which it sits, making it reach 52.5 meters (172 ft).

It is not, however atop a 2,300-foot mountain peak in the middle of one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the world.
