It was 2005, and Joshuah Bearman was due to fly from Dubai to Baghdad. Bearman was a security adviser. At the time they were starting to take over security for the United Nations elections.

He struck up a conversation with a Kurdish man, Ahmed, who owned all the duty-free rights in Iraq.

Ahmed and Josh decided to smuggle alcohol into the Green Zone — 2,000 cases of wine, 2,000 cases of liquor. Bearman decided to take the risk — and brave the road between the airport and the Green Zone.
