An orderly evacuation of government buildings turned hectic as the panic of 9/11 ensued, with word of an explosion at the Pentagon.

A plane appeared overhead just at 10 a.m. above Washington — a white jet circling over the White House. The Secret Service was deeply concerned about it. It is one of the enduring mysteries about 9/11.
Authorities say the plane was a military aircraft but that the details are classified. It looks to have been a Boeing E-4, a state-of-the-art flying command post, or “doomsday plane” . . .
