A team at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, led by Dr. Anthony Atala, has successfully grown transplantable organs in a lab. The researchers developed a 3D printer that uses living cells taken from a patient to output layers of tissue that can form different organs.
Dr. Atala likens the process to printing a 50-page document, except that each sheet of paper is actually a sheet of cells.
