Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine chats with Matt Lauer to talk about her book, “Above the Line: My ‘Wild Oats’ Adventure,” a new memoir about the travails of shooting the low budget Independent Film, “Wild Oats,” soon to be released.
She notes that while working on location in the Canary Islands, this stirred memories of a past life she believes she spent in the fabled continent of Atlantis.

As an American born into a typical Christian family and I could be considered as atypical. I have studied deeply all the epistemological questions all of my adult life. I am sixty-nine years of age. I too, have had many, many lives in many lands around the world. I remember many lessons. Remembrance or the lack thereof can be attributed to having a particular purpose for which we are born. The number of previous lives available can also strengthen or weaken the ability remember for a given individual. Never, expect an overwhelming amount of detail to come. It does not work that way.
I’ll be 88 in June. Shirley; I think I’ve learned some things others have not yet learned. I would love to be able to communicate with you. Life is always a learning experience. I know a man who swears his life began on Mars and has been coming back to Earth for the last 15,000 years. This is a new revelation to him, he is now 60 years old.
He is one of the most intelligent, levelheaded, skeptical and logical people I have ever known. (I’m 64)
I will not label him “enlightened”, that term really irritates me, it indicates superiority. I will not label him anything. He is just being as honest as he can be about the subject.
People who try to rationalize the irrational are are themselves being irrational.
Trust your gut and realize that our puny 5 senses are very limited in their ability to detect reality.
One of the things I learned long ago is to not judge the experience of others. Our opinion is merely an opinion and not really worth much on these matters. If Shirly said she had a certain experience, it is not up to us to debunk it with our “opinion.” I agree that religion was formed for political reasons by and large but there are “spiritual” truths that go beyond understanding. However, with that said, all kinds of rational people have had mystical experiences that have brought about amazing knowledge. Einstein, Tesala, Oppenheimer, Whitman, Emmerson, etc. each had “mystical” experiences that led to scientific discoveries or great poetry. They were doubted, chided, and called quacks from time to time.
Existential psychology suggests that the greatest fear, which, like the worm coiled at the center of being, haunts human consciousness is the fact that we are going to be annihilated by death and that ours lives are perhaps meaningless in the largest sense. Religion as a whole, including the notion of reincarnation, was invented as a defense mechanism against this horrifying dilemma. What I find troubling is that Shirley MacLaine, because of her privileged status, gets media access to millions in order to promote her book showcasing her bizarre fantasies, not least of which is an eight-foot tall man of gold transported from another time, that only she saw.
