Russia Today (RT), the state-run broadcaster with one of YouTube’s most popular channels is headquartered in London. However, their UK bank, NatWest notified the broadcaster that it would no longer be providing it with services as of December. No reason was given for the decision, which would not be subject to review.

British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said Monday that the bank can decide who it offers services to based on its appetite for risk.

Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of both the English-language television news network, RT and the state-owned international news agency Rossiya Segodnya said, “Hypothetically, this may have something to do with new British and American sanctions against Russia [over Syria], which may be announced soon. It may not. Our legal department is dealing with the issue now.”

Here, film director, screenwriter & producer Oliver Stone speaks with Afshin Rattansi, RT’s host of Going Underground about the UK bank account cancellation. When asked by Rattansi what he thought this action said about press freedom in the UK, Stone replies, “RT has always been responsible…maybe you’re a threat? Maybe they consider you propagandistic – but when I read London newspapers, I wonder who’s propagandistic! It seems that it’s a media war but it’s really a shame that the truth has been sacrificed.”

    • I absolutely love Oliver Stone! Or should I say, I admire and respect him, and think he’s a critically important film maker, with a contemporary relevant perspective. I Wish more folks would see his work, and try to understand his point of view. JFK come to mind as a seminal political docu-drama-esque piece of entertainment fiction, based on the truth, as was the Wall Street films, and Snowden was fantastic. I think he did United 93, which I never saw, because I recognized almost immediately that the Bush regime and most of his staff (Cheney, Rummy, Greenspan) are all traitors to not just the U.S.A., but to humanity, and I don’t even believe flight 93 happened (the evidence suggest it wasn’t even a plane, but a cruise missile – there was hardly enough wreckage for a passenger jet; but I digress).

I agree with much of Stone’s “philosophy”, and hope he cares to continue his work. He’s such an important artist for our times.

    • I totally agree with Oliver Stone. I no longer turn to the BBC or other British MSM first for international news because I know I am being bowled a curved ball. If only the BBC would produce programmes like Cross Talk, Watching The Hawks, Politicking and Going Underground oreven RT news in general . I fume at the the twisted, slanted “news” the BBC ejaculate at me. This is written by a person who has spent 40 years as a news buff turning on the BBC news as soon as I got up in the morning or when I return home from work.
